Turns out the fire got it all. Not much insurance. Not enough\nto start over. Howard\u2019s workshop gone, the crowded\nbench, scattered with wrenches, mismatched parts.\n\nHis son-in-law comes, helps him sort through the mess,\nset aside what might still be of use. In the end\nHoward knocks it down to keep trespassers out. In the spring\n\nhe\u2019ll set it on fire again, then bury what\u2019s left.\u00a0 Now\nhalf the roof\u00a0 sprawls wide, an upside down V,\u00a0\nwith shingles crooked and missing.\u00a0 A metal desk\n\nwith its one drawer closed, squats on its top.\nPeeking out from underneath\u2014the white door\u00a0\nthat never hung straight, always caught as you tried\n\nto enter. All of it like some giant broken nest, taunting me,\u00a0\na dark scar on the snow. Scraps entangled with the bare arms\u00a0\nof bushes. Gossip has it that faulty wiring caused the blaze,\u00a0\n\nsome jury-rigged circuitry. Howard was known for that,\u00a0\npiecing together odds and ends, making do\u2014sloppy but functional.\nNow nothing will replace it. He\u2019s taken to standing in the roadway\n\nlooking at the charred planks. At eighty-five he remembers when\nit was a working mill. The stringent smell of sawdust, the whir of the blades,\u00a0\nlike a coat he once wore. Tattered now.
